Leuk
The historic town of Leuk is situated amidst vineyards on a sunny terrace and offers a magnificent view of the Rhone valley and the Pfyn forest. The medieval atmosphere can be felt in the alleys and squares.
History
Leuk was already settled in pre-Roman times, as evidenced by isolated grave finds with poppy head needles, fibulae and belt hooks from the Latène period. In the 6th century, Leuk belonged to the crown estate of the Burgundian king Sigismund, who donated it to the abbey of Saint-Maurice. Thus, in 2015, Leuk town was able to celebrate its 1500 founding feast. The Romanized Celtic population of Leuk was gradually Germanized around the turn of the millennium by immigrating Alemanni, but still had a strong Romanesque minority in the 14th century.
